In reply to Rocana's caustic response to my recent viewpoints about "the patient revolutionary", I need to make my final installment in this protracted polemic surrounding Radhanatha Maharaj. I never really expected this whole strained dialogue to be so emotionally surcharged and personal. Since I know that Rocana really thrives on controversy and confrontation, if I'm willing to enter this arena, I should know better and not complain about some well-aimed bruises received along the way (and a few really hit hard too). I guess it's a proportionate reaction to my imperfect (or misinformed?) analysis of Rocana's perhaps muddled intentions.
As the Vedic aphorism wisely says: "atmavan manyate jagat" as our mind is, so goes the world. And this on-going tug-of-war is a case in point. Honestly, I'm still bewildered by this whole crusade against Maharaj. His accusers insist that he face up to a lot of the fallout from the darker hidden story of the New Vrindavan cult. Thus they bring forth a whole slough of morbid "facts" and further choose to declare that their's is also the right to stand on the high ground of "philosophical points" to assert their validity. Yet, for the love of God I still can't discern where is all this philosophical substance to be scrutinized and debated. And why even bother with the minutiae of their voluminous "proof", which is no more than vindictive hearsay.
So Rocana also pointedly avoids addressing the actual substance of my own statements, i.e. my strong objections to the strident mood of over-kill surrounding this whole campaign. Neglecting my message, he prefers to berate me for not joining this whole crusade of the "New Vrindavan Inquisition". He accuses me of lack of integrity for not wanting to also avenge the many abuses suffered by our own Canadian temples at the hands of Kirtanananda and his "henchmen". But I still can't see the point of dredging up this whole 20+ year-old sordid history.
Those who aided and abated the warped cult leader will surely pay up in the greater karmic justice. From where I'm standing, I have to again assert the fact that Radhanatha Maharaj is not the guilty collaborator of those crimes and abuses. Whatever mistakes Maharaj has done in the past under the tyranny of Kirtanananda have been absolved by his lifetime of service to the Sankirtan mission. The truth is that Maharaj is a proven successful spiritual leader. "Phalena paricityate": the results of his service speak for themselves. He must have done something right to inspire thousands of sincere souls to dedicate themselves to living and spreading Krishna consciousness. That this success is discounted by his detractors as the well-crafted show of an ambitious power-junkie is just so much vacuous obstinacy in their own malicious brand of "the truth". And history (Time=Krishna) will eventually show who is left standing at the end.
I also need to address some of the specific points raised by Rocana. First of all, please, don't bring in the sacred name of one of our transcendentally perfect guardians, Srila Bhaktisiddhanta, into the fray; that's totally petty and out-of-place. I'm not imitating anyone nor pretending to be anything other than what I am, a deluded aspirant for their merciful shelter. My own writing style may be tainted by some literary pride; but it's just my meager attempt at communicating my subjective viewpoints in my own personal words. If Rocana takes it as pretentious, so be it. Secondly, he has totally misunderstood the true intent of my response: the "patient revolutionary" was never referring to me at all (which is Rocana's rather puzzling spin). I had hoped that my honest attempt to enliven him with a valid analysis of our Vaisnava revolutionary heritage would convince him of my otherwise good wishes for his own higher service to Srila Prabhupada. The real revolutionaries are Srila Prabhupada's actual empowered followers, all those great souls who have imbibed the great revolutionary spirit of self-less dedication to Mahaprabhu's mission (of which I'm really lacking). So why savage the messenger if he's utterly misunderstood the essential message I hoped to convey?
Concerning my "impersonalism", rather than have a private one-on-one with Rocana, I chose to follow his lead and use the same public venue of discussion as he chose, i.e. Sampradaya Sun, to voice my strong disapproval of this barely veiled vendetta. But I was foolishly setting myself up for a real dose of Rocana's public chastisement. Under the banner of "tolerance for free speech", he can only show such severe intolerance for all those who stand in strong opposition to his mistaken campaigns.
Then Rocana finally decides to throw his knockout punch with more of his disjointed logic, by equating my support for Maharaj as the sure sign of an institutional sycophant. Whatever imperfect allegiance I have for Srila Prabhupada's legacy constitutes my life's only merit. If I choose to offer him my meager service within ISKCON's ranks, I don't feel I need to justify myself for Rocana's sake. As my duty to my saviour, I'm willing to cooperate as much as possible with Srila Prabhupada's other followers. But I won't do so blindly; all those who've known me for any amount of time know that I'm really not one to smugly tow the party line. When I see any successful servant of Mahaprabhu, whether in ISKCON or not, then he deserves my grateful support. And when I see any incongruities, either within ISKCON's management (such as the recent flawed attempt towards centralization), or in other sanghas, such as Sampradaya Sun's, then I also say so.
I've never hidden my opinions about the need for a lot more accountability and a lot less collective autocracy from our leadership. And my indiscreet venting of any bitter disappointments in these matters has only "added fuel to the fire" (and fuel for Rocana too). In my less satisfying dealings with some ISKCON managers and leaders whose style I find too abrasive, I've taken one of my good friend's advice not to provoke a losing battle of mutual confrontations and ego-clashes, but rather try to work things out whenever possible, in an attempt to follow Srila Prabhupada's final order to us all of cooperation. This has always been our greatest challenge. This type of compromise is suspiciously wimpy in Rocana's credo. But I have to tell him that my only motive in staying out of any large-scale challenges against the "powers that be" is only to keep myself physically and mentally in the daily sangha of the bhakti culture going on here in New Gokula, for my spiritual survival only. It's not heaven but it's still worth trying to keep ourselves on the path. (And it's certainly not for Rocana's ludicrous mention about the skimpy perks I find here.) But I can see why he feels this is such hypocrisy on my part for not publicly facing up to and challenging difficult leaders. So I guess I'll just have to bear his harsh judgment and try to reconcile my bruised integrity with my hopes of trying to do something worthwhile in my imperfect service to Srila Prabhupada's legacy and institution.
In conclusion, I will continue to seek out all opportunities to connect with Srila Prabhupada's many sincere and dedicated followers, whose good lives I hope to emulate, defend and glorify.

garudaji's most recent publishing effort motivated one reader to question, "how may ghost writers did it take to produce that thing?".
in a piece of literature with more bhasa than rasa, the apparent contradictions of a bhakta's mindset might be forgiven. this piece, in no way, purports to be "a bhakta seeking enlightenment". as his closing remarks suggest, rather, it serves as his "bully pulpit" by which the author of this piece intends to preach his point of view from a position of authority.
we sympathize with the "second generation" of ISKCON, having once been a member of that elite unit ourselves. now, through whatever twists fate had in store, we are no longer welcome in any of the branches of the ISKCON tree. it is incomprehensible that such individuals could purport to represent Caitanya Mahaprabhu's inclusive movement, when exile has, more often than not, been used as the first tool out of the ISKCON bag when working on a problem. it was the first strategy they employed against hansadutta after his infamous "guns for sanyassis" exchange with the ATF. it was the only strategy employed against New Vrndaban and it's residents after the philosophical infestation of the regal k swa era.
like quaranteened lepers, some 700 Srila Prabhupada disciples and the families, "more than all the NA temples combined" by garuda's own admission, were expelled by a minority party (whether it was the NA temple presidents or the GBC that voted expulsion) in interests that were never detailed or authorized.
the current ostracization of rocana prabhu and this most excellent facility that he has so kindly offered Srila Prabhupada and the rest of His movement is proof of the political nature of the letter which fails to refute any facts, but simply contends that such topics are somehow "avaisnava" because these allegations concern some member of ISKCON's ruling elite. this selective prosecution of individuals who refuse to respond to a "group think" mentality as it is expounded to us, from on high, by way of these illustrious intellectuals who tell the rest of us that they, as the brahmana class, are the brain of this movement and to think otherwise is to invite your own exile before long. the wheels of their political process now only require a few secure PAMHO access codes, and in minutes, anywhere on the planet, a guru can update his popularity with ubiquitous video footage of himself, sitting in court and giving darshan. how does this encourage the humility of the individual? for what purposes are such laudations offered? the motive is quite clear.
and, to the issue of "whose sentiments exactly are these articles supposed to represent?", let us look a little more closely at some of the content and some of the logical implications of it's postulates.
garudaji offers us these:
"let me say this is about my own personal realization about disciplic succession, which i received from Srila Prabhupada in personal realization."
this same "ritvik heresy" would get you banned from not only NV, but most, if not all of ISKCON. but there it is.
"i read GITA 6 times(the original version) and heard Srila Prabhupada in His books, in my heart and in my dreams".-- there it is again!
"i was given perfect understanding from Srila Prabhupada and His books."
then, suddenly, the mood of the article shifts dramatically. then come the paragraphs from hell.
"srila Prabhupada said that since He wasn't available for giving direction, it is duty to surrender to 'param-para' and in that way be connected with Him"
answer: how was it possible for Srila Prabhupada to communicate that He could not communicate? Srila Prabhupada communicated to me that He couldn't communicate with me at this level and that i should worship one of His disciples as good as i would have worshipped Him, but He was so forgetful, He didn't even tell me which one. maybe that wasn't Srila Prabhupada that you were talking to but other disciples of your siksa guru trying to warn you!
"never did the param-para stop and it wasn't about to with Srila Prabhupada"
answer: never did the parama-para stop, nor was it ever dependant on the ISKCON power elite for it's authenticity.
"He was 'too sincere' to pull some self- aggrandizement on His Guru"
answer: unfortunately, not so with many of His more notable disciples
"2nd generation was not as 'lucky' as 'those who met our Param-Guru in person"
answer: certainly not, since generation uno was so 'under the modes' as to think themselves pure after so short a period of devotional service. Srimad Bhagavatam assures us that one or three births(dhruva or jada bharata) are rare enough occurences to be mentioned in this universes Srimad Bhagavatam. 'lucky' is not the criteria by which spiritual relationships are formulated, neither "personal association" a requirement for receiving the mercy of Guru and KRSNA from within ones own heart. peace of heart only comes after several years of peace of mind.
"i am content with the accumulated inspirations of many of His disciples"
answer: don't be! pursue that direction that Srila Prabhupada is giving you. in your dreams, in reading His books, in preaching His glories and take it as the mercy of these siksa gurus that they have, in fact, finally brought the second generation "to Srila Prabhupada".these siksa gurus should therefore surrender these disciples to the service of distribution of Srila Prabhupada's books, especially the Bhagavad Gita. the original version, as that is the one which so inspired garudaji and so many millions before him to serve Lord Krsna as the goal of his life.
"i take inspiration from many present Prabhupada disciples"
answer: hopefully, this forum will broaden even those horizons
"if the succession were to stop, Srila Bhaktisiddhanta would have told Srila Prabhupada in a dream"
answer: the contention that the disciplic succession has somehow 'stopped' because of gaps, owing to lack of qualified indiviuals is a misunderstanding of the temporal nature of such gaps. this anomoly, this gliche, this catch 22 is what prevents pretenders from being able to much more than repeat rote some concepts they have memorized. karna's memorized astras failed him also, when he most needed them. KRSNA will not be cheated by these rogues.
"Prabhupada would have said it in His books.."
answer: Bhagavad Gita 4:2
This supreme science was thus received through the chain of disciplic succession, and the saintly kings understood it in that way. But in course of time the succession was broken, and therefore the science as it is appears to be lost.
PURPORT
It is clearly stated that the Gita was especially meant for the saintly kings because they were to execute its purpose in ruling over the citizens. Certainly Bhagavad-gita was never meant for the demonic persons, who would dissipate its value for no one's benefit and would devise all types of interpretations according to personal whims. As soon as the original purpose was scattered by the motives of the unscrupulous commentators, there arose the need to reestablish the disciplic succession. Five thousand years ago it was detected by the Lord Himself that the disciplic succession was broken, and therefore He declared that the purpose of the Gita appeared to be lost. In the same way, at the present moment also there are so many editions of the Gita (especially in English), but almost all of them are not according to authorized disciplic succession. There are innumerable interpretations rendered by different mundane scholars, but almost all of them do not accept the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Krsna, although they make a good business on the words of Sri Krsna. This spirit is demonic, because demons do not believe in God but simply enjoy the property of the Supreme. Since there is a great need of an edition of the Gita in English, as it is received by the parampara (disciplic succession) system, an attempt is made herewith to fulfill this great want. Bhagavad-gita--accepted as it is--is a great boon to humanity; but if it is accepted as a treatise of philosophical speculations, it is simply a waste of time.
the remaining apologies to the false ego for reading some thing unflattering about any GBC member must be taken more as a sign of omission rather tham commision. let us remain in our blissfully ignorant positions rather than muddle the heads of the neophytes, the bhaktas, and the otherwise perpetually underinformed. garudaji's urging for more restrained control of article factual content is quite reminiscent of the total lack of freedom one is submitted to in either the military or in the prison system. those who will not willfully discipline themselves will have to be disciplined by others. who decides who those others are to be and which laws are to be enforced has always been the domain of power hungry politicians. it is not different in this case, even if the politicians are wearing saffron sanyass dhotis.
as to the fact that this content may not be to the caliber that these intellectuals are prone, we remind them that if they are about Lord Caitanya's mission, if they are about "preaching to the most fallen", by their own definition, we fall square into that category. as their information is meant for the betterment of all living entities for all times, why must such negotiations always be conducted behind closed doors? why "offline" rather than in front of the entire worldwide devotee community? could it be that someone has an agenda that they don't want viewed on a worldwide screen?
we thank all concerned parties for their kind atention to this matter, to whatever degree they have chosen to involve themselves. Srila Prabhupada often said that surgery is meant to help the patient. The Truth can never be unpalatable to a true vaisnava. let us hope that these thoughts are received in a similar manner.
ALL GLORIES TO SRILA PRABHUPADA !!!
