Brijabasi Spirit Lives

This is a call for contributors to the Brijabasi Spirit, New Vrindaban’s community blog. Thousands of devotees have lived here over the years, and we want to hear from you.

The trials and tribulations of New Vrindaban have been well documented, both accurately and inaccurately, in books, the mainstream media, films, and devotee websites. However, partial truths are not the whole truth. Some people want to hear the other side of the story.

We acknowledge that the material energy operates everywhere, even in New Vrindavan, past and present, but this site is about the half full view of life. Keep it positive; glass half empty submissions will not be posted.

Although Kirtanananda was prominent in New Vrindaban history, he is not synonymous with it. He hasn't lived here for 15 years. This was started as a project for Srila Prabhupada's movement and Kirtanananda's falldown aside, it remains so.

A brijabasi is a resident of Vrindavan, and it was appropriate that the magazine of New Vrindaban was entitled Brijabasi Spirit. The Brijabasi Spirit first emerged in the early 70's as a mimeographed 10-12 page newsletter which was stapled together. By 1977 it had become a 20 - 30 page magazine which included black & white photos. The issues catered to the community residents and copies were also sent to North American temples. In 1980 to 1982 the magazine added a color cover, and by 1983 it had evolved into a glossy magazine with a sophisticated layout and colored photos throughout. The articles catered to Hindu and Western visitors, highlighting the community’s planned expansion and various projects. By the late 1980’s the magazine had returned to a simpler format. In the 1990’s it appeared sporadically until its demise in 1995. By the late 90’s the community produced a one or two page newsletter.

This reincarnation of Brijabasi Spirit as a blog was both logical, considering how information is transferred these days, and expedient, due to budgetary considerations. We hope this version is pleasing to Krishna and His devotees in some small way.

Articles should be about New Vrindaban and its residents, both past and present. Accounts of current events or remembrances of past events are welcome. If you live in New Vrindaban, lived here in the past, or have visited, share your experiences. Philosophy within the context of stories is encouraged but no essays please. Ideal length would be 600 words or less for news and announcements, with exceptions made for stories. There is a submission form on the site.
